Thoughts and Notes from President Bob Fewell

In early 1996 Julie and I purchased two cocker spaniel puppies shortly after loosing our 8 year old cocker to cancer. The breeder recommended that we train the dogs, so we looked for a good place, and selected TDTC for puppy class. I had no intention at that time of competing with my dogs, let alone ever becoming as involved in training as I have. But this sport can grow on one quickly as you bond with your canine companion and learn to work as a team. Now, almost ten years later, I find myself sitting down to write an article as TDTC president.
We have accomplished much over the past few years, due mostly to the dedication of all of those who volunteer their time and effort to making TDTC the premier dog training club in this region of the country. I would especially like to recognize the work of Jill Perry who guided us through paying off and expanding our building. And I look forward to working with the 2006 officers and board of directors to perpetuate our club’s fine reputation.
Since the November general meeting we have completed the 2005 class schedule, and enjoyed a fine Christmas party. Attendance at the party was a record according to Jeri Hajek. And fortunately the Dirty Santa activities were just about over when the makeshift gift table collapsed.
The December board meeting was, as is normal for that meeting, a long one. New board members are still getting use to their positions, and there’s always a lot of business to do that month, not the least of which is appointing committee chairpersons for the coming year. The new board members and chairpersons are listed elsewhere in this newsletter so I won’t list them here. However, we still have two positions to fill: Puppy Class Coordinator and Paw-Pals Coordinator #2. If you think that you may remotely be interested in either of these positions, or want to know more about what they require, please contact me.
In other business, TDTC is purchasing a machine that will assist us in rolling up and cleaning the mats. Rolling up the mats has always been a difficult task whenever we have a trial, graduation, or general club meeting. Now in addition to making that task easier, we will be cleaning both sides of the mats as we roll them. Also, since the rolls will be even and round (as opposed to a squashed roll) putting them back will be simpler too. Also look for NEW matting on the east side of the building. The mats on that side have really taken a beating from the agility equipment. The new matting will be easier on all of us whether we have two or four legs, and be safer too as there will be no seams jumping up to catch your shoes to trip you. We anticipate the new matting to arrive and be installed before classes start in January. A great big “Thank You” to Maureen Kelly and her committee for all of the work they did to locate and recommend the new matting.
Finally, given the time of the year, I would like to remind our members and students of TDTC’s bad weather policy. In many cases, if Tulsa Public Schools have canceled classes due to weather, then TDTC will also cancel classes. However, streets that may have been hazardous in the morning when the schools canceled their classes may be cleared and safe by the evening when most of our classes are held. It is ultimately up to the individual instructor as to whether their classes will be canceled or rescheduled. Please check with your instructor to find out how they plan to handle such situations.

How long have you been a TDTC member? 9 1/2 years

Other positions you have held at TDTC? Ways & Means Co- Chairman with wife Julie, Director of Obedience Trials, Agility Director.

Which classes do you teach? Currently I’m teaching Intermediate Agility, but also have taught Beginning Obedience, Beginning Agility, and Advanced Agility.

Who are your dogs? Tipper, Tina, and Katie are my three Cocker Spaniels, and Joey our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has just rejoined the pack at our house.

Why do you own the breeds you do? I tend to like the personality of the sporting breeds—it fits well in our household. Also I like a lap dog that enjoys snuggling next to me as I watch some TV.

Titles earned: The Cockers all have their CD’s. Tipper also has an OA and OAJ. Tina has her OA and AXJ. Katie also has her NA and OAJ. Joey hasn’t started competing yet.

Best training advice you have ever received: Always remember why you’re doing this. It is to share something special with your dog. If your dog is not enjoying itself, all the ribbons in the world will not make your dog happy. If your dog IS enjoying itself, then any ribbons that you get still take second place to the joy of working well together as a team.

Worst moment in a show: When Katie thinks that she has messed something up on an agility course she tends to stress and shut down. On a few occasions, that has meant skulking to the edge of the ring, rolling over and acting like I’m about to give her a beating, although I could never lay a hand on her in anger.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a very Happy New Year. But as the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and now the bills will start coming in. Guess what— TDTC is among those collecting. By this time you should have received your statement for the 2006 yearly dues and know that I am among those collecting. Dues will be delinquent if not paid by Feb. 15, 2006. Remember a single membership is $50.00 and a family (all of those living under one roof) membership is only $75.00. Pretty cheap for all the fun we get to have. If you have not received your statement please contact me. Thank you!

Our TDTC annual Christmas party was held on December 3, 2005, and we had 100 people show up! We also had 59 people playing Dirty Santa. A Farewell Note

Happy New Year!

I hope it finds everyone well and looking forward to another new start. I begin mine with a bit of excitement, a bit of sadness; excitement because my growing family is relocating to Colorado Springs; sadness because I must leave behind you, my friends.
2005 has been an adventure for us, even though we weren’t able to do much with our dog training. Our furry 5 Border Collies have managed to get a little training in despite Mommy being yucky pregnant, and have happily welcomed our new addition, Adam Nicholas who was born October 30th. They’ve taken in stride a bathroom remodel, slab and settling repairs, carpet replacement and a new baby. I attribute this to the training, experience and patience they (and I!) have received at TDTC.

Our three years training at TDTC have given us tremendous opportunities and experiences, and we thank everyone, instructor and classmate alike. It’s because of you we have in the furry family 3 Canine Good Citizens, 2 Therapy Dogs and a Dog Scout, that we’ve earned a herding title and a leg in Agility, and begun learning how to track. Your encouragement has made us a closer “pack”, taught us to enjoy each other and seek out new learning arenas.
2006 will begin with a new home in Colorado Springs, and new training and trailing adventures. Though we will miss you all, we hope the opportunity arises in the future to see you (and trial with you) again. Should you find yourself in Colorado, look us up. My friends who are so dear, you always have a place to land.

So until we meet again, thank you, good luck and be safe,

We also want to see your pictures—if you have a picture of your dog that makes you laugh or smile, please share. You may email items to JShamas@cox.net or put them in my box in the storage room.

You may receive your newsletter by email or regular mail. If you choose email, the club will save a few bucks on postage and you will receive a color version (the regular mail version is black and white). Something to Brag About

Nellie, TJ’s Real Brantnella (Dalmatian) finally got her CD at the fall TDTC show. We got legs the first two times out—then the fun began as she left the ring in 7 trials before we received the third qualifying score. Thanks to our many, many patient instructors. We needed all of your wisdom and encouragement. Now we will try Rally for awhile before returning to Open.

Bordertown Like A Rock, Chevy, took a 4 Point Major at the Fayetteville, Ark., show on Dec. 10 by going Best of Winners. This win takes him to a total of 11 points with three majors toward his Conformation Championship. Chevy also earned his first leg toward his CD with a Third Placement at the Border Collie Society of America National Specialty at Purina Farms. The last two legs were earned Oct. 29 and 30 in Duncan, OK, both with Third Placements.

Finally!

After numerous attempts with both my dogs, and many perfect scores with Celene, who always managed to get beat out on time, Cheri finally won the trophy on Agility Test Day in November. Cheri somehow managed to have the cleanest run with the fastest time of all the dogs that tested, including all the dogs that had previously won the trophy. Since we have been in sort of a slump in agility, it was very nice to win for a change. I am proud of Cheri and we are looking forward to getting out of our slump and back on track very soon. 2005 was a difficult year for us in many ways – 2006 just HAS to be better!

Paige Townsley and her collie, Angel, competed at the AKC Obedience shows in Fayetteville in December. Angel received her 3rd qualification, obtaining her Companion Dog title. Paige and Angel have been training at TDTC for the past 2 years and I am very proud of them both on this great accomplishment!

Barrett got Best of Breed on Friday November 4, 2005 at the Tulsa show. Because I was showing Sonya and Calie, Mary Green showed Barrett. She was in her jeans and did a wonderful job. There is a really special story about this picture. Please
ask Mary Green, Kim Sykes or Sharon Wilson what it is. (Couldn’t put the story in the newsletter).

Barrett and Calie also finished their first Rally Novice title this Fall. Thanks to all who help with their training.

New Pup Soon To Play Among The “Stars”

Cinder Glo Fly Me To The Moon “Kenzie” joined us on November 22. I chose Kenzie without even having seen a photo of her, based on her temperament and personality.

All I knew about her appearance was that she was sable and white, and that she was going to remain small. I wasn’t searching for a dog with any specific markings, but Kenzie showed up with the same markings as Celene on her face and head, and also Celene’s “glove” on her left front foot! It is funny how things work out sometimes—I like to think that Celene sent an angel to us, especially since Kenzie was born just two days after I lost Celene. Kenzie is very inquisitive, and has more energy than she knows what to do with. She is very bright and extremely outgoing, especially for a Sheltie. We are looking forward to starting her first class at TDTC in the spring.

Abby was an adopted rescue dog. She enriched my life as well as her sister, Phoebe’s. Abby trained and progressed through TDTC and quickly displayed the qualities of a good pet therapy dog, an activity which she enjoyed for seven years. Paw-Pals was her favorite outing and she eagerly anticipated each of her visits. Although we mourn her passing, our lives have been deeply touched by her place in our hearts. We miss you, Abby.
