For those of you that didn’t attend the September General Meeting missed the opportunity of being educated on the new Dog Parks in Tulsa and learning about the new proposed ones as presented by Kelly Carter and Herb Beaty. Thanks to Steve for keeping the members of the TDTC well informed.
Our final session of the year started the week of September 14th. Please when
you see one of our instructors, give them a round of thanks for their hard work.
Paws-in-the-Park was held on October 18th was a big success due to all of the
hard work of Jan Logan, Jeri Hajek and Gisella Klindera. Thanks ladies. Because of their efforts along with the other volunteers, TDTC will now have a new plaque to display at the building.
Our 2 day AKC Obedience/Rally trials were held October 25 & 26, 2008. Events such as this can only be successful because of all of the hard work of many volunteers headed up by Maureen Kelly, Sally Poindexter, Lorrie Russ, Jeri
Hajek and Jill Perry. A team that is hard to beat!!
Test week will be the week before Thanksgiving with Graduation on November
21st. Instructors, please sign up to evaluate the classes. On Saturday, November 22nd there will be a Canine Good Citizen test from 12 to 2. Volunteers will be needed to support this event. However, just because our classes have ended it doesn’t mean that Club’s activities have stopped.
The first event will be our AKC Agility trials that will be held on December 5th, 6th, & 7th at the Expo Square, Super Duty Arena. Please plan on attending these functions either by showing or working or better yet both. The second event will be our Christmas party that will be on December 13th at the Building. Please plan on attending since it is a very nice way to end an active year by enjoying good food, friends and of course the laughter during the gift exchange. More information will follow later.
For the regular members, the Board has mailed out some purposed changes to
the By-laws. Please return your ballot as soon as possible. Also please
remember that our November is our Annual Meeting where the new slate of
officers is voted in for 2009.

They say I fell and loosened the bottom part from the top and could have a fractured Tibia. Guess when I do things big, I really do things BIG! I’m sorry I couldn’t work the trial this weekend, but my husband said he’d put a foot through my backside if I didn’t stay away. We’re both kinda nervous since we’re not sure what will happen….but I will keep people informed and hopefully by the time everyone reads this I’ll be just “peachy” and ready to go! Andy’s getting a little lazy, but if I can’t run in December at TDTC’s trial, I’ll find someone who he’ll run for. Only need “1” more leg in Standards to get his Open Title.

[/vc_cta][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”” visibility=”” width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”Report from Tulsa’s Dog Park Task Force” title_align=”separator_align_left” align=”align_center” color=”grey”][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]For at least 15 years various Tulsans have tried to establish a modern off leash or “bark park” in our city. Finally on June 3, the Park and Recreation Board (the “board”) established a task force to recommend the establishment of one or more such facilities at the September 9 board meeting. The city has consistently and repeatedly told the task force members that the city has NO funds available for such a project.
Very early in its deliberations, the task force concluded that any suitable off leash park would have five essential components—at least 1 acre within a secure fence, parking for at least 50 vehicles, safe water, double gates and willing volunteers to manage the park daily.
Within a week of the creation of the task force the staffs of the Park and Recreation and Public Works Departments presented the task force with descriptions of 25 potential sites, all but one of which are owned by either Tulsa or ODOT. Every one of these sites would make a satisfactory dog park and none has been rejected from potential future consideration.
Very quickly the task force identified three sites for more detailed planning. An unused baseball field at Newblock Park on Charles Page Boulevard was easily the first choice for quick conversion because it already had the necessary fencing, gates, parking and water. Very nice additional features were clean restrooms and flood lights which could be used to extend the hours of operation. Therefore it could become a very satisfactory dog park at very little expense. So the task force received board approval on July 1 to create the region’s first legal off leash park at that location. A Grand Opening of the Joe Station Bark Park was held on Saturday, 8/9, and the public’s reception has been greater than expected and very favorable. People are coming to visit from all over the region which demonstrates the great demand for such parks in NE OK.
Also, the task force received board approval on 7/1 to prepare detailed plans for two other sites. One is at Hicks Park at 34th and Mingo where there are about 8 acres of little used open space which includes a number of mature trees–a highly desirable component of bark parks. Hicks Park has plenty of parking and an excellent Recreation Center. Another very significant amenity is a nice playground adjacent to the area which is being planned as a bark park. (A significant problem which has arisen at Joe Station is the fact that families come with small children and dogs. No children under 12 are permitted and a playground would be nice but they cost about $70,00o each.) We expect board approval of a Hicks Park Dog Park on 9/9.
The third site is on ODOT property which was acquired for the Broken Arrow Expressway right-of-way, It contains about 4.8 acres and is surrounded by the BA, the “Detroit” exit, 13th St., and the Cincinnati overpass. It is directly east of Boston Avenue Methodist Church. The process to permit the city to operate this ODOT land as a park has begun and satisfactory completion is expected soon. Also, the Boston Avenue Methodist Church has agreed to let its “Detroit Avenue” parking lot be used by park patrons. As soon as the ODOT agreement and a detailed master plan are completed, fund raising will commence for the “13th St.site”
At the 9/9 Park and Recreation Advisory Board meeting the task force will request approval to develop a master plan for a fourth park at Hunter Park, south of 91st, between Yale and Sheridan. It is hoped that a portion of an existing pond can be included in the Hunter Park Bark Park–thus giving our canine friends a safe legal place to swim’ Tulsa County has some “Four to Fix” money and a plan to create a dog park in O”Brien Park, 6149 N. Lewis, but a schedule has not been established. We are aware of no other plans to create public bark parks in the metropolitan area.
Currently the task force plans to help establish bark parks at those five locations and, perhaps, one or two more and then recommend a regional plan and some public funding for these very popular parks for both people and their dogs.

Paws in the Park

What a wonderful event on a beautiful day! Paws in the Park was held at the River Walk Crossing in Jenks along the bank of the Arkansas River.
Tulsa Dog Training Club was once again given the prime real estate spot for the event. We had a tent set up for our information booth, our dog crates and a nice size ring to demo rally and obedience. We had a lot of public attention at the information booth and ringside.
The information booth received good questions ( I like good questions) and handed out brochures, Canidae samples along with Canidae snap biscuits for the dogs to enjoy.
Did you see our club’s Director of Training on TV? You should have been watching! Debra Hnath and Rin Tin Tin X did the first KJRH TV-2 segment representing TDTC and we all need to thank Debra for bringing Rin to the event and for doing a wonderful job for our club. I might add that Rin is a beautiful dog and LOVE that structure.
Mike DeLorey once again did a great job on the live segment with my boy Sting (Ch. TBoldt’s Sting Ray Fastback, CGC) closing the news at 9:55AM Saturday morning and being interviewed by Marla Carter. Thank you Mike – you are the best!
Now a thank you to the volunteers that helped load up on Friday evening – that showed up at 6:30AM on Saturday morning and then packed it all up and unloaded at the club at 1PM.

By-Laws

Shortly all regular members will be receiving a ballot and the following changes in the mail. I hope you will take the time to vote yes for these changes.

The board of directors approved the following by-law changes. They are presented for your consideration, to be voted on at the November General meeting. The first section is how the by-law is now. The underlined print is what is being changed. The bold italic print in the second section (of the same number) is what it is being changed to. According to the by-laws they may be amended by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of those regular Members voting.

Please return your ballot to Dovie Ryan by the November 14 general meeting or bring it with you to the meeting.

ARTICLE II
Meetings and Voting

Meetings of the Board of Directors shall be held in (or within 25 miles of) the City of Tulsa on the second Friday of February, April, June, August, October, and December at such time and place as may be designated by the Board. How to Photograph Your Puppy

1. Remove film from box and load into camera.
2. Remove film box from puppy’s mouth and throw in garbage.
3. Remove puppy from garbage and brush coffee grounds from muzzle.
4. Choose a suitable background for photo.
5. Mount and focus camera.
6. Go find puppy and take dirty sock from mouth.
7. Place pup in pre-focused spot and return to camera
8. Forget about spot and crawl after pup on knees.
9. Focus with one hand and fend off pup with the other.
10. Get tissue and clean nose print from lens.
11. Take flash cube from pup’s mouth and discard.
12. Throw out cat and put peroxide on scratch on pup’s nose.
13. Put magazines back on coffee table.
14. Try to get cute expression by squeaking toy over head.
15. Replace your glasses on your face and fish camera from under sofa.
16. Jump up in time to grab pup by scruff and say “no, outside.”
17. Call spouse to clean up mess.

Animal Poison Control: Toxic Plants

This list contains plants that have been reported as having systemic effects on animals and/or intense effects on the gastrointestinal tract.
Please note that the information contained in our plant lists is not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather a compilation of the most frequently encountered plants. A lot of these plants and shrubs surprised me, and I have some of them in my yard. Fortunately, I keep my dogs out of the flowerbeds, but as the article states, a lot of people bring in summer plants for the winter, so it would be a good idea to check this list first.

Please tell every dog owner you know. Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled, and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden.
Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, Calypso had a seizure and died instantly. Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company’s website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.
Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s, and they claim that it is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees depending on each individual dog. ‘However, 98% of all dogs won’t eat it.’

cocoamulch. asp Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and other garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called ‘Theobromine’ . It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.
Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, axanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.
We are passing this on not to scare you but to make you aware of a commonly purchased item that may have a potentially fatal effect on your pets. Please pass this on so that all pet owners may be informed.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
